This medicine absorbs water, swells and turns into a gel in the gastrointestinal tract to control transport of the gastrointestinal contents, thus preventing diarrhea and improving constipation.

It is usually used for the treatment of abnormal bowel movements (diarrhea and constipation) and gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
