This medicine lowers blood sugar level by the effect of moving the glucose transporter 4 to the cell membrane via the activation of AMP kinases, and the effect of decreasing the intracellular fatty acid concentration by promoting the burning of fatty acids in the liver and skeletal muscle cells.

It is usually used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.
