This medicine inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the renal tubule and excretes uric acid in the blood into the urine.

It also inhibits excretion in renal tubules such as penicillin and maintains these high blood concentrations.

It is usually used to treat gout, to maintain penicillin and para-aminosalicylic acid concentration in the blood.
