This medicine shows antiprotozoal and antibacterial action by changing into a nitroso compound within the Trichomonas vaginalis protozoa or body of fungi and inducing destabilization of the DNA helix.
It is usually used to treat Trichomonas vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis.
